If you are like many homeowners, you are probably looking for ways to decrease your energy bill each month. Many times as the weather becomes warmer, people tend to overspend on their AC in attempts to keep their house comfortable and cool. Luckily, there are ways to keep your house comfortable without cranking up the AC. Here are a couple suggestions.
1. Keep The Sunlight Out
The sun heats up the outdoors and causes the temperature to rise. It does the exact same thing in your house, even if it is through the windows. This is why you should do what you can to keep the sunlight out of your house, especially during the hottest hours of the day. For example, in the afternoon you should close the drapes or the blinds to keep the suns rays from heating up the house. If you don't, you can expect to see a rise in the temperature of your house and your AC to kick it up to try and make up the difference.
2. Uncover Hard Flooring
Another easy way to keep the house cool is to uncover your hard floorings in the house. If you have wood or tile, pull up the rugs in the summer or when the weather gets warmer. The rugs in the house will insulate the area so that it holds the heat more. This is why houses in warmer climates tend to keep as much tile and wood in the house because it is an easy way to cool it down.
You can put the rugs down again when the weather cools down, but during the hottest time of year, you should consider letting the hardwood show.
3. Circulate The Air
Many times you don't even need to have cold air blowing to keep everyone comfortable. Instead, you just need to keep the air circulating throughout the house. This can easily be done with a fan. You can use a ceiling fan if you have one or you can install store bought fans throughout the house. Fans are incredibly inexpensive to power, but they can keep everyone cool in the house. This is why it is best to use a fan whenever possible. It is a simple and inexpensive way to keep your house cool.
These are just a couple simple suggestions to keep your house cool in the warmer months. Remember you don't have to always use the AC; you just have to get creative about keeping the house cool.
